The Zoo's conservation plan

In addition to our work with animals at the Zoo - known as ex situ conservation - a central part of our mission is to help conserve nature and biodiversity around the world. We do this through activities in animals' natural habitats. Conservation work in these habitats is known as in situ conservation.
But why is in situ conservation important?

Because the accelerating degradation of natural systems has brought us to a critical point where opportunities to conserve biodiversity are disappearing in many places. Copenhagen Zoo therefore places particular emphasis on conserving animal species threatened by human activities.
The Zoo's in situ conservation efforts focus primarily on areas with high biodiversity and unique, threatened ecosystems. Most of these areas are outside Denmark, but we also recognise our responsibility towards nature closer to home. That is why we also work on projects that support the conservation of native Danish species.
