Start your day at Copenhagen Zoo

There is always something happening at Copenhagen Zoo.

Walk through the Tropical House and look for animals among the leaves. Meet the elephants in the Elephant House, watch the giraffes from inside their house or step into the Arctic Ring to get close to polar bears.

What you can experience changes throughout the day. Feedings, talks and activities are listed in Today's program, so check it before you start exploring.

You may discover something you weren't looking for.

Things to do in Copenhagen with kids

Copenhagen is easy to explore with children, and there is plenty to do when small legs need more than sightseeing.

At Copenhagen Zoo, children can move between animals, play and activities throughout the day.

In Kids' Zoo, you can meet pigs, horses, llamas, cows and rabbits. You can also get close to the goats and watch the zookeepers as they care for the animals.

Need to burn off some energy? There are playgrounds around the Zoo where children can climb, balance, crawl and move like some of the animals they have just met.

You can also pick up The Zoo Mission and solve tasks as you explore the Zoo. Along the way, children learn about animals, nature and some of the challenges wildlife faces around the world.

Try these with children

  • Meet the animals in Kids' Zoo

  • Explore the playgrounds around the Zoo

  • Take part in The Zoo Mission

  • Visit Zoolab

  • Check Today's program for feedings and activities

  • Look for animals in the Tropical House and Nocturnal House

Things to do in Copenhagen when it rains

Rain is part of a trip to Copenhagen sometimes. Fortunately, it doesn't have to decide what you do with your day.

There are plenty of indoor places to explore at Copenhagen Zoo.

Step into the warm air of the Tropical House, where animals can move above your head and around your feet. Visit the elephants or giraffes indoors, explore the Nocturnal House or stay dry while watching animals in the Arctic Ring.

You can also visit the Primate House, Kids' Zoo and Zoolab.

So keep the raincoat with you, but don't let the forecast make all the decisions.

See Copenhagen from the Zoo Tower

Want to see the city from a different angle?

Climb the 182 steps to the top of the Zoo Tower. The viewing platform is 43.5 metres above the ground and gives you a view across Copenhagen. On a clear day, you may even be able to see Sweden.

The tower was built in 1905 and has been part of Copenhagen Zoo for more than a century.

Your visit to the tower also supports Copenhagen Zoo's conservation work.

Things to do in Copenhagen for adults

You don't need to bring children to spend a day at Copenhagen Zoo.

Take your time watching the animals, listen to talks from the Zoo Guides and learn more about the work behind the habitats. You can also discover how Copenhagen Zoo works with conservation projects in Denmark and around the world.

Check Today's program before your visit if you want to plan around a particular feeding or talk.

Then climb the Zoo Tower, find something to eat or continue your day through Frederiksberg.

A slower pace often means you notice more.

Explore Frederiksberg before or after the Zoo

Copenhagen Zoo is in Frederiksberg, surrounded by some of Copenhagen's largest green spaces.

That makes it easy to combine your visit with more things to do nearby.

Walk through Frederiksberg Gardens

Frederiksberg Gardens are next to the Zoo and have been a popular place for Copenhageners to walk, meet and spend time outdoors for generations.

Follow the paths past lawns, lakes and Frederiksberg Palace, or simply find somewhere to sit after a few hours at the Zoo.

Take a walk through Søndermarken

On the other side of Roskildevej, Søndermarken offers another green route through Frederiksberg.

Walk beneath the trees, take a break on the grass or continue to Cisternerne, the underground art space beneath the park.

A visit to Copenhagen Zoo, Frederiksberg Gardens and Søndermarken can easily become a full day in this part of the city.

More things to do in Copenhagen

There is plenty more to explore if you're spending several days in Copenhagen.

Walk along the harbour and through Nyhavn, visit one of the city's museums or head to Tivoli Gardens. You can also explore Copenhagen by bike, take a canal tour or simply choose a neighbourhood and see where the streets take you.

Copenhagen is compact enough to combine very different experiences in one day.

You could start among animals and green spaces in Frederiksberg, then continue towards Vesterbro and the city centre later in the day.

Or do it the other way around.

The animals won't mind.
