Copenhagen Zoo was founded in 1859 by Niels Kjærbølling. At the time, travelling menageries toured Europe with animals from around the world – primarily to put them on display, make money and demonstrate the power of distant rulers.

But as early as 1827, 32 years before Copenhagen Zoo opened to visitors, Regent’s Park in London opened its gates. Today, it is considered the world’s first modern zoo. The first zoos were established with a clear purpose: to bring animals together not only for display, but also to create knowledge. The aim was to present species that could contribute to public education and scientific understanding.

Although modern zoos bear little resemblance to those early institutions, the idea of education and knowledge remains – albeit in a more up-to-date and responsible form.

Today, we work actively to conserve nature and strengthen people’s understanding of animals and their habitats. At the same time, we have a responsibility for the animals living at the zoo. They must be provided with good conditions that meet national and international standards, as well as opportunities to express their natural behaviour through enrichment and training – every day.

Why are there animals at the zoo?

It’s a good question. And the short answer is: because they play a vital role in protecting nature – both now and in the future.

Modern zoos like Copenhagen Zoo work actively with conservation. The animals are an important part of that work. They inspire fascination and curiosity, helping us learn more about the natural world. At the same time, they provide a basis for research and international breeding programmes that help strengthen threatened species around the world.

You could say that the animals at Copenhagen Zoo act as ambassadors for their counterparts in the wild. When you come face to face with an animal, a special connection can arise. And it is precisely that connection that can help more people understand why protecting nature matters – and inspire them to get involved.

So it is not simply about having animals at the zoo, but about keeping them in the right way. That involves two levels:

  1. Individual welfare: The animals must have a high standard of welfare and good living conditions.

  2. Population management: Populations must be managed so they remain healthy and genetically diverse – far into the future.

Science-based zoos work systematically to meet the needs of the animals while actively contributing to species conservation. But we also know that zoos differ, and that not all of them live up to that responsibility.

At Copenhagen Zoo, our ambition is to do it properly. To create knowledge and fascination among our guests that reaches far beyond a visit to the zoo. And to play an active role in international partnerships that help ensure healthy animal populations – even 100 years from now.

How does the zoo work with its animals?

To inspire our guests and communicate effectively, we need to create the best possible conditions for the animals. Otherwise, we risk telling the wrong story – and failing to live up to our purpose as an advocate for conservation.

That is why high standards of animal welfare and consideration for the animals’ natural needs are fundamental to the way we work at Copenhagen Zoo.

This is reflected, among other things, in how we provide enrichment and training for the animals at the zoo:

Enrichment at the zoo

At Copenhagen Zoo, we work actively to enrich the animals’ daily lives. This helps encourage natural behaviour. We do this in a number of ways, including how we feed the animals, creating the right conditions for breeding, designing varied enclosures and establishing social groups that reflect life in the wild.

Feeding at the zoo

Today, the different species are fed in ways that allow them to express much of their natural feeding behaviour. For example, the animals are not fed at fixed times. This helps prevent them from becoming accustomed to a set routine and growing restless shortly before feeding time. After all, food does not appear at fixed times in the wild either.

Predators are fed carcasses – whole, dead animals – rather than traditional cuts of meat. Fur, skin, bones and tendons naturally make feeding take longer and encourage a wide range of natural behaviours.

Foraging

The biology of most herbivores is adapted to spending much of their waking time searching for and eating food. Some species graze across large areas throughout the day, while others feed on leaves and twigs in dense forests.

At Copenhagen Zoo, for example, you will often see plenty of branches, both with and without leaves, placed in the enclosures. The animals can spend a great deal of time eating both the leaves and the bark. Herbivores are also given plenty of alfalfa and hay in feeding racks and hay nets, allowing animals such as giraffes and elephants to find their food at a natural height.

Young animals as enrichment

Having young, caring for them and all the activity that comes with it is another important part of supporting natural behaviour at Copenhagen Zoo.

It is important that the animals are able to follow a natural breeding cycle. This means having the opportunity to reproduce at natural intervals – among other things, to help maintain healthy populations across zoos and, where relevant, to ensure that zoo populations can serve as a reserve for possible reintroduction into the wild.

Young animals also create many opportunities for natural behaviour. Adults spend time on courtship, mating and caring for their young, as well as teaching them how to behave within the group.

Enclosure design

When Copenhagen Zoo plans new enclosures today, the animals’ biology is central to deciding which physical features should be included. If, for example, we were designing a new enclosure for a bear, we would naturally take into account that bears are opportunistic predators – animals that search, rummage and dig wherever there may be something to find.

You will also notice tree trunks throughout the zoo. They give the animals opportunities to climb, gain a better view, practise their balance, scratch and bite at the bark, and sometimes search for larvae and insects.

Naturalistic enclosures are an essential part of communication and education in a modern zoo, helping us better understand how a species lives.

Species and social group composition

Species and social group composition are another key part of Copenhagen Zoo’s enrichment programme. We place great emphasis on keeping animals in the right social settings.

Some species are highly social and thrive best in larger groups. Within these groups, you can observe natural social behaviours such as mutual grooming, establishing and maintaining a hierarchy, and caring for young together. These are all important forms of natural behaviour that contribute to the animals’ wellbeing.

Training at the zoo

Training means developing skills or experience through repeated, systematic practice. In short: learning. And that applies to animals as well as humans.

Learning is a natural part of life for animals. Young predators, for example, may wrestle and play with live prey caught by their mother, helping them practise the skills they will one day need to catch prey themselves.

Animals in the wild need to learn a wide range of skills, such as finding food, building a nest, defending a territory or raising young. Those that learn quickly and develop the right skills are more likely to survive and reproduce. This learning is, in effect, training – and it is an important part of animals’ natural behaviour.

That is why we also train the animals at Copenhagen Zoo in many different ways and for many different purposes.

Frequently asked questions about training at the zoo

Naming policy at the zoo

Have you ever wondered why only some animals at Copenhagen Zoo are given names? And what criteria we use when naming the animals?

The names are not chosen at random – and we cannot simply call the animals anything we like. One reason is purely practical. For some species, typically mammals, zookeepers and vets need to name individual animals so they can tell them apart and work with them in their daily training and care.

Copenhagen Zoo's educators and communications staff also use the animals’ names when speaking to guests and the media. This mainly applies to individuals from some of the most distinctive and popular species, which feature prominently in the stories we tell at the zoo every day.

Copenhagen Zoo’s naming policy must both reflect our official view of nature and allow for contemporary, guest-focused communication at the zoo, on social media and in the press.

A key principle of the naming policy is that names must not contribute to the humanisation of animals – also known as anthropomorphism. In other words, the animals cannot be called Karen, Jeff or Darth Vader, to give just a few examples.

In short, the following criteria must always be followed when naming animals at Copenhagen Zoo:

  • The name must not encourage anthropomorphism.

  • The animal should have only one name.

  • The animal should not have a nickname in addition to its official name.

  • The name should be easy to say and pronounce.

  • The name should have no more than three syllables.

  • The name should be clearly distinguishable from the names of other animals in the same group.

  • The name should ideally be inspired by the species’ geographical origin, habitat, zoology and/or cultural history.

  • The name must not have an offensive meaning in other languages.
