About us

Copenhagen Zoo is one of Denmark's oldest cultural institutions with a history that dates back to 1859. At that time, the ornithologist Niels Kjærbølling was responsible for establishing a zoo in the southwestern part of Frederiksberg Gardens. It was one of Europe's first zoos.

Today, ZOO is one of the preferred destinations for outings with fascinating animal experiences, education, and activities at its core. ZOO has around 1.3 million visitors annually and houses more than 4,000 animals of over 250 species.

Our overarching purpose is to protect the world's animals through direct conservation work and by increasing visitors' knowledge of animals, so they take greater ownership in the effort to preserve global biodiversity.
