You join the zookeeper team from early morning when the elephants are fed and watered and their enclosures are made ready and cleaned.
You move around backstage and bury for example carrot bits and apples in the elephant enclosure, so that the elephants need to rummage in the sand to find the food. It is enriching for the elephants to work for food, just like they would in the wild.
After lunch it is time to help in the Children's Zoo and at the savannah. Pigs and/or ponies are challenged through agility, the enclosures need to be cleaned and the animals to be fed. You also learn to read pony behavior and check signs of well-being. Afterwards you will take a walk in the Zoo with your separate pony to let the animals experience something other than their usual pen.
As zookeeper for a day you also learn how to train a camel and experience the training methods of the professional zookeepers. Camels must be able to open their mouth on command, lift a leg and allow the zookeeper to touch them by the ears and eyes so that the vet can examine and treat them if they get sick. Training is also enriching for the camels. As part of the training you check the camels for wounds, cut their nails with pliers and get a ride on camel back.
The zookeeper day ends at the Savannah where okapis, antelopes, giraffes, hippos, rhinos and zebras are fed. In the summer you hang out branches to the giraffes, feed the banded mongoose with rats and give the okapis their melons in the outdoor enclosure. In winter you let the animals into the stables for feeding.
In Zoo anything can happen. We have routines, but working with live animals means that no two days are the same, and the program may be changed. Who knows, maybe the rhinoceros needs to go to the vet, or the African pygmy goats are to be chipped?
One thing is certain: You will get a unique and rare insight into life as a zookeeper and life in the Zoo.
