NATURE CONSERVATION

The scientific department works to manage ZOO’s wide and unique animal population optimally, which means they work deep in the central parts of ZOO’s foundation: breeding, breeding collaborations between zoos worldwide, animal behaviour and animal health. The scientific department’s overall expertise is in active play every day, and at the same time it is enjoying high prestige nationally and internationally.

Experience is used and expanded at the same time, through nature conservation projects among rhinos, giraffes and elephants in Africa, tapirs in Southeast Asia, lion monkeys in South America, musk oxen in Greenland – as well as croaking frogs in Refsvindige on Funen. As you can see, ZOO works actively in the wild and has employees in many parts of the world dealing with nature conservation projects in local areas.

So, what does this mean?

WHAT

Part of ZOO’s mission is to actively contribute to the conservation of endangered species and their habitats, based on a scientific foundation. This scientific foundation is formed from research in the wild, as well as through the management of the animal population at ZOO.

WHY

ZOO’s purpose is to contribute actively to the conservation of nature and its biodiversity, as described in ZOO’s mission, based on the overall goals of zoos. Only by constantly focusing on, and by working with, conservation of endangered species and their habitats, are we able to effectively counter the threats and preserve the species for posterity.

HOW

The particularity of zoos is that nature conservation activities are based on herds in zoos which act as representatives of their wild counterparts. In this way, the management of the animal population in ZOO also provides knowledge and research results that can aid in the preservation of wild species in the future.

ZOO has employees in many parts of the world who work with research in different animal species at the local level, based on entrepreneur projects, in order to conserve the animal species and their habitats. You can read more about ZOO’s projects in the wild here.
